Khilafat

The Successorship of Prophethood

Allah had promised to those among you who believe and do good works that He will surely make them Successors in the earth, as He made Successors from among those who were before them; and that He will surely establish for them their religion which He has chosen for them; and that He will surely give them in exchange security and peace after their fear: They will worship Me, and they will not associate anything with Me. Then who so is ungrateful after that, they will be the rebellious.

 Surah An-Nur, verse 56

The word Khilafat means succession, and a Khalifa is a successor to a prophet of God whose goal is to carry to completion the tasks of reformation and moral training that were seeded by the prophet. The community of followers of a prophet continues to nurture its faith and practices under the blessing of the institution of Khilafat. Allah says in the Holy Quran:

Allah had promised to those among you who believe and do good works that He will surely make them Successors in the earth, as He made Successors from among those who were before them; and that He will surely establish for them their religion which He has chosen for them; and that He will surely give them in exchange security and peace after their fear: They will worship Me, and they will not associate anything with Me. Then whoso is ungrateful after that, they will be the rebellious.

Holy Quran 24: 56

Hence, just as Allah appoints a prophet, it is He who appoints a Khalifa as well. He chooses the person who is most eligible to become a Khalifa, and guides a group of pious believers into manifesting His will through a process of selection of the Khalifa. Thus, it may apparently seem that the Khalifa is chosen by a group of people, but it is in fact the will of Allah that guides their faculties into choosing the Khalifa of His choice.

Khilafat-e-Rashida – The Rightly-Guided Caliphate

In light of the Divine promise mentioned in the aforementioned verse of the Holy Quran, the Holy Prophetsa gave glad tidings regarding the establishment of a spiritual system of leadership among his followers. He says:

Prophethood shall remain among you as long as Allah shall will. He will then bring about its end and follow it with Khilafat on the precepts of prophethood.

Mishkat al-Masabih, Kitab al-Riqaaq

He further says:

O my Allah, have mercy upon my successors who will come after me, relating my sayings and my practices and teaching the same to other people.

Jami As-Saghir v. 1, p.60

These two narrations elucidate the fundamental principle that Khilafat in essence is a continuation of the mission of the Prophet and that the objectives and the aims of Khilafat and Prophethood are the same.

Emphasising the importance of Khilafat-e-Rashida, the Holy Prophetsa says:

Follow in my footsteps and the footsteps of Khulafa-e-Rashideen who would be fully guided to the right path.

Sunan Tirmidhi, Kitab al-Ilm

These clear elucidations left absolutely no doubt that a system of Khilafat was going to be established after the demise of the Holy Prophetsa and certain individuals would be there as the spiritual embodiment of this system.

This is exactly what happened. Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiqra, Hazrat Umar bin al-Khattabra, Hazrat Uthman bin Affanra and Hazrat Ali bin Abi Talibra were chosen as Khalifa one after the other. Their total period of Khilafat was nearly thirty years. This period of Khilafat is generally known and described as Khilafat-e-Rashida, i.e. the rightly guided caliphate.

The personal name of Hazrat Abu Bakrra was Abdullah, but based on his son’s name, Bakr, he was known as Abu Bakr. His father was known as Abu Qahafah and his mother as Ummul Khair Salma. He was born in 572AD in Mecca. He was a close friend of the Holy Prophetsa. He was the first among men to confirm the truth of the claim of the Holy Prophetsa and thus earned the title Siddiq. He was in the company of the Holy Prophetsa during his migratory journey (Hijrah) from Mecca to Medina. He was the only companion of the Holy Prophetsa in the cave Thaur, where they both took refuge during this journey.

After the sad demise of the Holy Prophetsa, Hazrat Abu Bakrra was elected as the first Khalifa. He had to deal with an extremely difficult situation which developed due to the sudden demise of the Holy Prophetsa.

The first problem was that some of the tribes renounced Islam, simply because their tribal chiefs did not feel necessary to remain loyal to the successors of the Holy Prophetsa. Not only that but they started preparing to attack Medina to end the newly established institution of Khilafat. After knowing their intentions, Hazrat Abu Bakrra sent troops and succeeded in suppressing their rebellion.

Another major problem faced by Hazrat Abu Bakrra was that a number of ambitious persons pretending to be prophets, started rebellion against the Islamic state. Musaylimah al-Kadhdhab and Al-Aswad al-Ansi raised large armies and captured some of the Muslim territories. Hazrat Abu Bakrra was prompt to fight back these rebellious false prophets. Despite meagre resources, Allah granted him victory against the mischief mongers.

One of the many great achievements of his Khilafat was the collection of the Holy Quran at one place. Although the writing and arrangement of the Holy Quran was done under the supervision of the Holy Prophetsa himself, yet it was written on various pieces of skin, leaves and slates. Hazrat Abu Bakrra collected all these pieces of writings in one place, and re-organized the system of Huffaz, or those who committed it to memory, in a systematic way, for the preservation of the Quran.

Hazrat Abu Bakrra passed away on August 23, 634 AD, after remaining ill for fifteen days. He remained Khalifa for a little over two years.

Hazrat Umar ibn al-Khattab was born in 581 AD in Mecca, and belonged to a noble family of the Quraish. He was a renowned businessman and used to lead trade delegations to Syria and Iraq. When the Holy Prophetsa announced his claim to Prophethood, Hazrat Umarra became a fierce opponent of Islam, so much so that one day he took up his sword and left his house with intention to kill the Holy Prophetsa. On his way, someone told him to first deal with his own sister and brother-in-law, who had accepted Islam. He went straight to them and knocked at their door, he could hear the Holy Quran being recited inside the house. This made him furious and he started beating his brother-in-law, and wounded his sister who tried to protect her husband. His wounded sister said in a resolute voice, “Umar! You may beat us as much as you like, but we are not going to give up our faith”. This made him calm down and he asked them to recite a portion of the Holy Quran for him. He was so moved by the Quranic verses that his eyes filled with tears. He went straight to the Holy Prophetsa and accepted Islam. As he was a strong, fearless and influential man of Mecca, he proved to be a source of strength for Muslims.

Hazrat Umar ibn al-Khattabra was the second Khalifa of the Holy Prophetsa. During his Khilafat, the Muslim had to fight a number of battles against Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Egypt. As a result of this, vast areas of these countries came under the Muslim rule. When the city of Jerusalem in Palestine was conquered by Muslim in 17 AH, Hazrat Umarra himself visited the city on the request of the Romans, and signed a treaty between the Muslims and the people of Jerusalem.

Hazrat Umarra established a splendid system of administration for the Islamic state which includes the establishment of Majlis Shura – a consultative body of advisor to Khalifa, division of the whole Islamic state into provinces to facilitate administration, establishment of a finance department and building of schools and mosques in different parts of the state and the introduction of Islamic calendar of Hijrah.

Hazrat Umarra was so anxious about the welfare of his people that he used to go around in disguise, in the city of Medina at night, to see himself if anyone was in need of help. Once, during his patrol at night, he observed a woman cooking something in a pot while her children were crying around her. He found out from woman that the children were hungry for two days and the pot was put on fire just to console them. He immediately went to the treasury, and himself brought all the necessary food items to the woman. On his way, one of his servant offered to carry the load but he stopped him saying: “Would you carry my load on the Day of Judgment?”

The woman, who had not seen Hazrat Umarra before, was so pleased that she prayed aloud for him saying, “May Allah make you the Khalifa in place of Umar”. On hearing this Hazrat Umarra started crying and without saying a word left the place.

In 644 AD, Hazrat Umarra was stabbed by a Persian slave, while he was offering his prayers. This proved fatal and he passed away at the age of sixty three on 26th of Dhul Hijjah, 23 AH. He was a truly great Khalifa whose period of Khilafat was undoubtedly a golden period in the history of Islam.

Hazrat Uthman ibn Affanra belonged to the well-known family, Banu Umayya of the Quraysh. His lineage can be traced back to the Holy Prophetsa in the fifth generation before him. His generosity for the poor was so well known that he earned the title Ghani, meaning generous.

Hazrat Uthmanra embraced Islam through the preaching of his close friend, Hazrat Abu Bakrra. He was the fourth person to embrace Islam, but he faced much hardships as his uncle started persecuting him. He migrated twice, first to Abyssinia and then to Medina.

The Holy Prophetsa held Hazrat Uthmanra in great esteem, and married his daughter Ruqayyahra to him. When she died, he married his second daughter, Umm Kulthumra to Hazrat Uthmanra. Thus, he was called Dhun-Nurayn, meaning the one with two lights.

Hazrat Uthmanra was the third Khalifa of the Holy Prophetsa after Hazrat Umarra. During his Khilafat, Islamic state expanded further. A rebellion in Iran was crushed. In the north, the Romans were once again defeated by the Muslim forces. As a result of these battles, the whole of Iran, Asia Minor and Egypt came under Muslim control.

One of the major achievements of Hazrat Uthmanra was that he felt the need that Quran should have a standard orthography so that the non-Arabs embracing Islam should not have difficulty in reading and understanding the Holy Book. Hence, he made copies of the Holy Quran from the one compiled by Hazrat Abu Bakrra and burned other personal transcriptions which were written in different tribal writing styles.

The last six years of his Khilafat passed in chaos and conflicts due to the conspiracies of certain groups including that of Abdullah ibn Sabah, a Jew who had become a Muslim with an intention of weakening the Islamic state.

Hazrat Uthmanra was martyred on June 17, 656 AD, at the age of eighty-two, while he was reciting the Holy Quran. He certainly sacrificed his life for the integrity of Khilafat in the best interest of Islam.

Hazrat Alira was the son of the Holy Prophet’s uncle Abu Talib. He was born in Mecca about twenty years after the birth of the Holy Prophetsa. When Hazrat Alira was born, the Holy Prophetsa himself became his guardian, as Abu Talib’s financial position was very weak.

Hazrat Alira was a brave and skilled warrior. He participated in almost all the battles along with the Holy Prophetsa. Hazrat Alira was married to Hazrat Fatimahra, the daughter of the Holy Prophetsa.

Soon after his election as the fourth Khalifa after the demise of Hazrat Uthmanra, Hazrat Alira moved the capital of the Muslim State from Medina to Kufa in Iraq, which was a more central place. After his election, he faced the popular demand of Muslims, including influential companions of the Holy Prophetsa, like Hazrat Talhara, and Hazrat Zubairra to immediately punish the murderers of Hazrat Uthmanra.

Hazrat Alira announced that his top priority was to restore law and order in the state, only after which he would be able to bring the assassins of Hazrat Uthmanra to justice. But Hazrat Talhara and Hazrat Zubairra did not agree with Hazrat Alira. Hazrat Aishara who was not aware of the real situation also joined them. A group of hypocrites led by Abdullah ibn Saba, who were involved in the murder of Hazrat Uthmanra took advantage of this situation and furthered the flame of conflict. Hence, Hazrat Aishara, Hazrat Talhara and Hazrat Zubairra led a small army towards Basra. At this, Hazrat Alira also gathered troops and travelled to Basra.

Hazrat Alira sent an ambassador to the opposing party and sought their opinion. It was mutually agreed that the best course of action would be to contain any further unrest and to let the rule of law be established so that the offenders could be brought to justice.

This news of agreement troubled the hypocrites who were present in both camps. Hence, they secretly met and planned to make sure that the battle continued. They killed Hazrat Zubayrra who had readily accepted his mistake in front of Hazrat Alira and had withdrawn from the battle. Hazrat Talhara was murdered by another person. They also attacked the camel of Hazrat Aishara and it was only when her camel was injured that the battle came to an end. Hazrat Alira gave her due respect and sent her back to Medina in the escort of her brother.

After the Battle of Jamal, Hazrat Alira urged Amir Muawiyara to submit to him who continued to insist that the blood of Hazrat Uthmanra be avenged first. The circumstances that ensued led to a battle between them but ended in an accord that the matter be decided by an arbitration committee, which unfortunately ended in failure.

A large group of people, who later came to be known as Kharijites (meaning ‘the outsiders’), who were against the arbitration separated from Hazrat Alira and chose an independent leader for themselves. Hazrat Alira tried to persuade them to submit to him, but failed. This led to a fierce battle in which many Kharijites were killed.

Afterwards, Hazrat Alira was attacked by a Kharijite while going to the mosque for prayers. Two days later, this courageous and pious leader passed away on 20th Ramadan, 40 AH.

Khilafat-e-Ahmadiyya

While the Holy Prophetsa apprised his followers of Khilafat-e-Rashida which was established soon after his demise, he also gave glad tidings about the re-establishment of Khilafat in the latter days in the precepts of Prophethood. Hence, he says:

Prophethood shall remain amongst you for as long as Allah wills. He will then cause it to end. Then Khilafat will be established in the precepts of prophethood which will last for as long as Allah wills. He will then cause it to end. Oppressive kingship will follow [which will inflict great pain and misery on its subjects]. Its rule will last for as long as Allah wills. He will then cause it to end. After this, tyrannical monarchy will follow. Their rule will last for as long as Allah wills. Allah will then cause it to end. Khilafat will then be re-established in the precepts of Prophethood. Thereafter, the Holy Prophetsa became silent [and added no more comments].

Mishkat al-Masabih, Kitab al-Riqaaq

This makes it clear that the Khilafat, promised in the Holy Quran, is basically a permanent blessing but it was made conditional to the right belief and good deeds. At the end of the first era of Khilafat, because of the degeneration and due to the absence of the required conditions, this blessing was, in a way, withdrawn from those people. But the history of Islam continued precisely in the same order as mentioned in the tradition of the Holy Prophetsa quoted above. Oppressive governments came and went; dynastic monarchies and Muslim empires were established and faded away.

“The second manifestation cannot occur until I depart, and it is only when I depart that God shall send the second manifestation for you which shall abide with you forever. It is, therefore, necessary for you to see the day of my departure so that the day may follow which is the day of everlasting promise. I have appeared from God as a glory and I am one of His glories duly personified, but there shall be other persons after me who shall bear the glory of His second manifestation.”

Founder of the Ahmadiyya Musilm Community

Finally came the time for the promised revival of Islam. Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas claimed to be the Imam of the age, the Promised Mahdi, and the awaited Messiah – a prophet of God, but in full subordination to the Holy Prophetsa. He initiated the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in 1889.

After his demise in 1908, Allah fulfilled His promise and established Khilafat, once again, on the precepts of prophethood. For over a century, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has been flourishing under this Divine institution and presenting the true Islamic teachings to the world.

Hazrat Hakeem Nooruddin(ra)Hazrat Maulana Hakim Nooruddinra was born in the village of Bhera in Punjab in 1841. He was the youngest son of Hafiz Ghulam Rasool of Bhera. The genealogical tree of his family shows that he descended from Hazrat Umarra, the second Caliph of Islam. He was a colossal personality – a talented author, eminent scholar and a theologian par excellence. Being very well versed in medicine, he was royal physician to the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir for many years. He was a seeker after true knowledge in pursuit of which, he travelled far and wide enjoying the privilege of a four-year stay in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

Under Divine commandment, when the Promised Messiahas initiated the Bai’at on 23rd March, 1889, Maulana Hakeem Nooruddinra was the very first person to swear the pledge of allegiance to him. His devotion and dedication to the Promised Messiahas was complete and total.

After the demise of the Promised Messiahas, Hazrat Maulana Hakeem Nooruddinra was unanimously acclaimed as his Khalifa on 27th May 1908. He guided the community in this capacity till his death on Friday March 13, 1914.

Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad(ra)The Holy Prophetsa is reported to have said:

He (the Promised Messiah) shall marry and will have children

This was an indication that this marriage would be of a special nature and, through this, Allah shall grant him such children as would be assisting and co-operating in carrying on his mission.

The Promised Messiahas himself received revelations that contained the prophecy concerning the birth of an illustrious son who would be Musleh Maud – the Promised Reformer. In the fulfilment of this prophecy, the promised son, Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmadra was born on 12 January 1889 in Qadian.

He not only had intrinsic and spiritual knowledge but his insight into basic wisdom was so vast and deep that, however, learned a scholar, armed with whatever worldly knowledge attacked Islam, he would prove to be a mere academic novice. Allah had granted him a deep encyclopedic intrinsic spiritual knowledge and understanding of the Holy Quran, thus fulfilling the prophecy that through him the glory of Islam and the dignity of Quran would be convincingly established. During his life he wrote a detailed exegesis of the Holy Quran comprising ten volumes namely Tafsir-e-Kabeer which is a truly spectacular source of Quranic wisdom.

At the time of the Promised Messiah’s demise, this promised son, who was only 19 years of age, stood by the bed of the Promised Messiah and vowed:

Even if all the people leave you and I am left alone I would stand by you and would face all opposition to and onslaughts on your Mission.

He very well kept up his covenant, and, all through his life, never cared for anyone’s enmity or opposition and, always actively endeavoured towards the progress of Islam Ahmadiyyat.

Following the demise of the First Caliph Hazrat Hakim Nooruddinra, he was elected as the second Khalifa of the Promised Messiahas on 14 March 1914.

In the long 52 year span of his Khilafat, apart from the achievements the community gained under his leadership, he also guided the nation in crucial situations. During the Simon Commission and the Round Table Conferences, he guided the nation through his valuable writings and speeches.

Furthermore, in order to establish peace, understanding and goodwill among the communities he laid the foundation of regular and frequent holding of “Founders of Religions Day” meetings, in which speakers from various faiths were invited to speak about the teachings of their own religion and founders from one platform.

Leaving behind incredible legacies, Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmadra passed away on 8 November 1965.

Hazrat Mirza Nasir Ahmad(rh)In Talmud, there is a passage which indicates that on the death of the Messiah, his spiritual Kingdom will pass to his son and grandson. In one of his books named Haqiqatul Wahi, the Promised Messiahas thanks God for the grant of four sons and the birth of a grandson at a future date. The much awaited prophecy was fulfilled when Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmadra was granted a son on 16 November 1909, whom he named Mirza Nasir Ahmad.

Hazrat Hafiz Mirza Nasir Ahmadrh succeeded as the third Caliph of the Promised Messiahas in 1965. Since then he tremendously expanded the missionary activities of the community.

In the 1970s, when Pakistan declared the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community a non-Muslim minority, it was the guidance offered by Hazrat Mirza Nasir Ahmadrh that helped the Community to bravely face and pass through the hardships, which continue to date. Equally historic is his sermon declaring that we are Muslims. He says:

We have passed through painful times and now we are receiving reports that wherever the number of Ahmadis is small and they are weak they are being boycotted. They cannot obtain food or drink. Shopkeepers are told not to sell even the indispensable necessities of life to them, and water carriers have been told not to supply water to them. We are not worried that we are being afflicted with hunger, as we have been warned of it in the Holy Quran:

“We will surely try you with somewhat of fear and hunger, loss of wealth and lives and the fruits of your labour.” (2:156)

Reports that are coming in indicate that just now the emphasis is on depriving the Ahmadis of food and drink. On receipt of such reports I call to mind and remind those who are in touch with me that our beloved master, the Seal of the Prophets, Muhammad Mustafa (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was during the Meccan period besieged along with all the Muslims in the narrow valley of Abu Talib for a period of two and a half to three years. They were all sorely tried and were denied the necessities of life. Allah so ordained that they were able to obtain just enough to maintain life with difficulty.

After over sixteen years of Khilafat, having unqualified success in stepping stones to further triumphs of Islam, Hazrat Hafiz Mirza Nasir Ahmadrh passed away on 9th of June, 1982.

Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad(rh)Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmadra married Hazrat Syeda Maryam Begum on 7 February 1924. In the Nikah sermon, Syed Sarwar Shah Sahibra, a venerable companion of the Promised Messiahas said:

I am now advanced in years and would soon pass away, but those who live would witness the advent of servants of the faith born in this wedlock with a Syeda as occurred before. This is my resolute conviction.

This servant of the faith, Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmadrh was born on 18 December 1928 in Qadian. He grew up as a righteous and virtuous person under the guidance of his illustrious father and devout mother and with Divine blessings.

His erudition encompasses wide range of knowledge both spiritual and material. After graduation, he obtained the Shahid degree from Jamia Ahmadiyya (Theological Academy) at Rabwah. Then he studied in Europe for two and a half years.

Following the demise of Hazrat Mirza Nasir Ahmadrh on 9 June 1982, Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmadrh was elected as the Fourth Caliph of the Promised Messiahas. Under his able guidance and with Divine help, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community made great strides. Progress and advancement was evident in every respect – geographically, historically, morally, and spiritually.

In the era of Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmadrh, the Community came to exercise considerable influence winning more and more adherents, among them eminent personalities and tribal kings.

In 1992, under the guidance of Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmadrh, the first ever Muslim Television was launched in London. Currently, MTA International network runs 9 channels and is watched by millions around the world.

In 1994, Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmadrh founded a humanitarian organization. This international aid agency named Humanity First provides aid and assistance to those in need irrespective of race, religion or politics from registered offices now in 53 countries including India.

Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmadrh passed away on 19 April 2003.

Mirza Masroor AhmadHazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmadaba was born on 15th September 1950 in Rabwah, Pakistan to the late Mirza Mansoor Ahmad and the late Nasira Begum Ahmad. Upon completing his Master’s Degree in Agricultural Economics in 1977 from the Agriculture University in Faisalabad, Pakistan, His Holiness formally dedicated his life to the service of Islam.

From 1977 to 1985, His Holiness served in Ghana, engaged in social, educational and agricultural development projects. He is accredited with successfully growing wheat on Ghanaian soil for the first time in the nation’s history.

After the demise of the fourth Caliph, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmadaba was elected as the fifth Caliph of the Promised Messiahas on 22 April 2003 and serves as the worldwide spiritual and administrative head of the Community. Read more about his Holiness here.
