On 16 February 2025, the World Head and Fifth Caliph of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmadaba, met with a delegation of Khuddamul Ahmadiyya (Ahmadi young men’s auxiliary) from the Northwest Region of the USA at Islamabad, Tilford, UK. During the meeting, a Khadim sought guidance from His Holiness regarding the use of protein supplements and steroids in bodybuilding, a practice that has become quite common among young people. His Holiness replied:
The fact of the matter is that illegal steroids should not be taken. They are generally prohibited. In professional sports competitions, such as the Olympics, tests are carried out, and those who are found to have taken [steroids] are disqualified, and cases are filed against them. Even when this is discovered later, after they had won a competition, their titles and prizes are revoked, and all results are altered accordingly. Everything is reverted. Thus, when something is considered universally illegal, it should be treated as such.
One should work out according to their natural strength. Body building is done to make one’s body strong and fit. However, using steroids actually weakens the body instead of strengthening it.
Their side effects manifest later in life. After a certain age, the negative effects [of steroids] begin to appear on the body. This is the reason one should not use it and rely on their natural strength.
If a person works out regularly and gradually increases their weightlifting capacity, by moving from 1 kilo to 10 kilos, then that would be acceptable as the body is progressively adapting to it. But to say that one does not feel anything and should therefore take medicine in order to lift [weights]—what is the benefit of that?
You are not participating in the Olympics. You are not going to win any prize from there. To do so only to impress those around you, you will end up damaging your health in the long term. What is the benefit of that?
