Doomsday Clock Moves to 85 Seconds to Midnight, Its Closest Ever

The Doomsday Clock inches closer to midnight than ever before, as the world edges towards catastrophe, echoing the longstanding warnings of the Ahmadiyya Khalifa on the urgent need for justice, disarmament and lasting world peace.

The world has moved four seconds closer to catastrophe. On 27 January 2026, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists set the Doomsday Clock at 85 seconds to midnight,[1] the closest it has ever been to midnight since its creation in 1947.

The latest adjustment from 89 seconds to 85 seconds reflects growing concerns over nuclear threats, climate change, disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), and biological risks. Scientists have also warned that rising nationalism, intensifying rivalries between major powers, and declining international cooperation are making these dangers increasingly difficult to address.

The Clock is a symbolic warning of the man-made threats confronting humanity and the urgent need to prevent a global catastrophe.

The latest setting also echoes the longstanding warnings of Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmadaba, Worldwide Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, who has repeatedly urged world leaders to prioritise peace, justice, and international cooperation over narrow national interests.

He has reminded the world time and again that disagreements should never be sought to be resolved through wars and conflicts. He has consistently called for limiting nuclear proliferation, ensuring responsible technological development, and establishing justice in international relations as inevitable prerequisites for achieving sustainable global peace.

Above all, he has emphasised that mankind must recognise its Creator, the Lord of all the worlds, Who does not favour any particular nation or people, but desires peace and prosperity for all humanity. It is this recognition that can truly inspire people to rise above national, racial and religious divisions and work together to build a world founded upon mutual respect, equality and lasting peace. Without recognising the rights of all people and fulfilling the obligations owed to one another, no amount of political or technological progress can guarantee a secure future for generations to come.

With the Clock now closer to midnight than ever before, the message is clear: the world must change course before it is too late. The future of humanity depends on leaders choosing dialogue over conflict, justice over self-interest, and cooperation over division.
