In a landmark achievement, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) carved its name into the history of space exploration as it successfully landed Chandrayaan 3 on the moon’s surface[1]. This remarkable feat marks a momentous juncture for India as it became the fourth nation to accomplish this prestigious objective. The landing also marked an unprecedented milestone, as no country had previously ventured to the moon’s south polar region.

While the success in itself is epochal, the story of redemption it encapsulates further enriches the value of this triumph. Chandrayaan 3 rectified the failure of its predecessor Chandrayaan 2, which did not achieve a successful lunar landing. In this way, Chandrayaan 3 emerges as a marker of India’s victorious return, driven by its refusal to admit defeat. It demonstrates ISRO’s unwavering commitment to learn from mistakes and propel forward with renewed determination.

While this epoch-making event stands as a historic moment for India, the significance of this tremendous episode transcends national borders. Chandrayaan 3’s accomplishment ushers in a new chapter of humanity’s collective efforts to discover the mysteries of the cosmos. It is expected to significantly contribute to man’s knowledge of the moon, its geology and history, reiterating the mission’s paramount importance, not only to India but to the entire world.

Chandrayaan 3’s achievement also resonates with the values that Islam stands for. Islam encourages man to delve deep into the mysteries of the universe as this endeavour grants him the true recognition of the Creator. Hence, pondering upon the creation and functioning of the universe has been described in the Holy Quran as a characteristic of God’s righteous servants. It says:

“In the creation of the heavens and the earth and in the alternation of the night and the day there are indeed Signs for men of understanding; Those who remember Allah while standing, sitting, and lying on their sides, and ponder over the creation of the heavens and the earth: ‘Our Lord, Thou hast not created this in vain; nay, Holy art Thou; save us, then, from the punishment of the Fire.’”[2]

In light of this, we extend our sincere wishes to Chandrayaan 3’s continued expedition. We hope and pray that the mission fulfils its objectives and contributes to humanity’s quest for knowledge. We anticipate the successful completion of this outstanding journey of enlightenment that seeks to enrich our understanding of the moon and beyond.
