INAMULLAH MASROOR, QADIAN
If we take a moment to observe the natural world, we find that God has tucked profound spiritual lessons into even the smallest of His creations.
Take the striking contrast between the honeybee and the housefly. The honeybee lives within a beautifully structured system, united under the leadership of a single queen. Guided by this unity and shared purpose, bees never settle on filth. They seek out fragrant flowers, working together with quiet dedication to produce honey—a substance the Holy Quran itself describes as carrying “healing for mankind”.[1]
The housefly, by contrast, is a completely different story. It has no leadership, no unity, no shared purpose. It drifts aimlessly, drawn to impurity, and wherever it lands, it contaminates and spreads disease.
This simple observation from nature is a powerful metaphor for human societies. A community united under a divinely guided leader becomes like the honeybees—a genuine source of peace, healing, and spiritual nourishment for the world. But when people lack that central, unifying spiritual guide, they scatter. Torn apart by conflicting opinions and self-interest, they slide into moral decay and create disorder wherever they go.
This is exactly the wisdom behind the famous prophecy of the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa, who warned that Muslims would divide into seventy-three sects—all of which would fall into the ‘fire’ except for one united community, described by him as al-Jamaah. That ‘fire’ is not only a punishment in the Hereafter. It is the burning agony of discord, disunity, and aimless wandering that scorches people in this very world.
The one saved community is the one that produces the honey of peace and unity under divine leadership. For the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, that divine leadership is Khilafat.
The Promise in Surah An-Nur
To truly appreciate the weight of this blessing, we turn to the Holy Quran—specifically the ayat-e-istikhlaf (verse of Khilafat) in Surah An-Nur, where Allah promises:
“Allah has promised to those among you who believe and do good works that He will surely make them Successors in the earth… and that He will surely give them in exchange security and peace after their fear.”[2]
Prophets are mortal, and when they leave this world, their followers are naturally plunged into grief and vulnerability. Enemies celebrate, convinced the mission has died. But God does not abandon the believers—He establishes Khilafat as His answer to their fear.
Prophethood is like a divine seed planted in the earth. The Prophet departs, but from that blessed seed grows a magnificent, deeply rooted tree—Khilafat. It is only in the shade of this tree that believers find lasting security, sheltered from the scorching heat of materialism and the storms of worldly opposition. Through Khilafat, fear is transformed into unshakeable peace, and the religion of God is firmly established on earth.
The shield and what it demands
The Holy Prophetsa beautifully captured this very need for a protective spiritual leadership. He said:
“The Imam is but a shield, behind whom the Muslims fight and by whom they are protected.”[3]
A shield only works when you stay behind it. The moment you step out from its cover, you are exposed to every arrow the enemy fires. In the spiritual sense, staying behind the shield means giving wholehearted obedience to the Khalifa of the time. Khilafat is a blessed rope lowered to humanity by God Himself, and the strength of the community lies in holding onto it together, without letting go.
A powerful example of this obedience is found in the life of Hazrat Umarra. After the passing of the Holy Prophetsa, when certain groups refused to pay Zakat, Hazrat Abu Bakrra—the first Khalifa—made the resolute decision to stand firmly against this rebellion. Hazrat Umarra initially disagreed with this. But the moment Hazrat Abu Bakrra made his position clear as the Khalifa, Hazrat Umarra let go of his own view entirely—without argument, without lingering doubt. He later said that as soon as he saw Allah had opened the heart of the Khalifa to this decision, he knew with certainty it was the truth. He submitted, completely and without reservation.[4]
A similar spirit of obedience can be seen within the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in the life of Hazrat Mirza Bashir Ahmadra—the son of the Promised Messiah, the founder of the Community—who was himself a deeply revered scholar of exceptional intellect and learning. As a dedicated researcher of Islamic theology, he would thoughtfully present his views before the Khalifa of the time. Yet whenever his opinion differed from that of the Khalifa, he would abandon his own view without the slightest hesitation or resentment. He would submit wholeheartedly to the Imam’s decision, trusting that Allah guides the heart of the Khalifa.
Such sincerity and obedience place a person under the safe shelter of Divine guidance and safeguard them from the dangers of falling into error.
The ark in a flooding world
Humanity today lives in a world heavily dominated by materialism—a spiritual flood that quietly erodes faith and moral clarity from beneath our feet. In the middle of this storm, Khilafat stands as a divinely guided ark of salvation, and the Khalifa is a living lifeline for all who seek refuge.
Being the spiritual successor of prophethood, a Khalifa is appointed to act as a source of guidance, support, and refuge for the community of believers. The Ahmadiyya Khilafat, established in accordance with the prophecy of the Holy Prophetsa, beautifully fulfils these responsibilities and reflects these qualities.
Each week, through Friday Sermons broadcast globally via MTA, the Ahmadiyya Khalifa recalibrates the moral compass of his followers and draws hearts back to the pure teachings of Islam. While the world sleeps, he stays awake in prayer for the well-being of all mankind. Every person carries the profound privilege of writing directly to him—finding in his replies a clarity and comfort that lifts even the heaviest of burdens.
Such a relationship between a people and their spiritual leader cannot be manufactured by worldly systems or political authority. It is a sign of Divine grace—one that revives faith, unites hearts, and restores the spiritual vitality that the Muslim world so desperately needs today.
A message to a searching world
The true framework of Islam was never meant to exist in fragmentation, but in the spirit of a united community. As Hazrat Umarra puts it, “there is no Islam without a community, and no community without leadership, and no leadership without obedience.”[5]
Yet we see that the vast majority of the Muslim world is wandering today without a unifying spiritual guide. Sectarian conflict, broken families, crumbling moral values, and a deep, restless emptiness that no amount of wealth or distraction can fill—these are the signs of a world that has lost its spiritual anchor. People are not lacking in sincerity or intelligence. What they are lacking is a living, divinely guided voice that can cut through the confusion of this age and point them back towards God.
It would be inconceivable—indeed, a blasphemy against God’s mercy—to think that He left the followers of His beloved Prophet to remain in this perilous state. He indeed fulfilled His promise that He would bring about means of unity and refuge for mankind.
Ahmadiyya Khilafat—established in the latter days on the precepts of prophethood—is that living Divine scheme for the revival of Islam. It is the fortress of safety that would safeguard humanity from the storms of the materialistic age. It is the sweet honey of peace, unity and divine love that offers healing from all spiritual ailments.
